Watering

After approximately 7 to 10 days of daily watering, scale your watering down. To train your roots to go deeper (and thus become more winter hardy and drought resistant), do not water blindly on a rigid schedule. Hold off watering your mature grass until a slight wilt is detected in the foliage, then give it two consecutive days of heavy watering. Taking your sprinkler system off the timer and following these instructions toughens your grass while lowering your water bills.

During the first month, water your grass at any time during the day. After the first month, water only in the morning; no evening watering. Note: Your municipality may be under watering restrictions due to drought conditions. Contact your city water department to find out when you are allowed to water.

Cold weather preparations

When severe temperatures are predicted (a "hard" dry freeze) it is especially important to water extremely well just ahead of the low temperatures. The root systems of lawns that are wet going into low temperatures will have minimal to no damage.
